Apple Watch’s First Approved Game Revealed

One of Apple’s Best of 2014 winners, Rules!, is the first game approved and ready for the Apple Watch’s release on April 24th. For those unfamiliar with the game, here’s a quick gameplay video:

My first reaction to the news was slight disappointment. Not because Rules! is a bad game by any means, but because the last time I played a game on a similar-sized screen I was on my old Sony Ericsson 8 years ago. Basic logic puzzle games seem a bit rudimentary when you have Final Fantasy, The Room or literally the same game on a bigger screen in your pocket (the Apple Watch is only compatible with the iPhone 5 and later).

Apple haven’t made a big deal about gaming on the Watch, and its battery life may be the reason. Can smart watch games do anything notable or will they just be little more than scaled-down versions of their smartphone counterparts? Fitness-based apps and games seem to be the only credible option at the moment.

We know that a Zombies, Run! app is already in the works. Why not turn workouts into a real-life RPG the way EpicWin does for to-do lists? An espionage-themed running game involving hacking and codewords (because let’s face it, we’re all only buying one to look like James Bond) would be perfect. Anything besides simply porting Doodle Jump to a tiny screen please developers.

So will the Apple Watch be a step backwards for mobile gaming? What games or apps would you like to see grace the Apple Watch? Let us know in the comments below!
