PS4 to PS5: Complete list of games with free next-gen upgrade to PlayStation 5
Which PS4 games will allow a free upgrade to the PS5 version?
Those upgrading to a PlayStation 5 this holiday season face an interesting dilemma this holiday season. Do you purchase a PlayStation 4 game knowing that it will also be getting a release on PS5?
To help with this decision, some publishers are offering free upgrades for their games, allowing users to purchase the PS4 version and then upgrade to the PS5 version for free when it becomes available. Others are offering to do this for a small next-gen upgrade fee. Others, like Sony with Marvel’s Spider-Man, are not doing this at all.
EA, for instance, is doing something called Dual Entitlement with their sports titles. That is, if you purchase Madden 21 or FIFA 21 on PlayStation 4, you can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free as long as you do so before the release of FIFA 22. So you’ll have about a year to upgrade. There are also some rules regarding digital/physical upgrades you can read about here.
Other publishers, like 2K, require you to either pay an upgrade fee like NBA 2K21. Or you can purchase the Mamba Forever Edition, which is the only version that includes the free upgrade.
The same is true for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. If you only purchase the Standard edition, you’ll need to pay a $10 upgrade fee.
It’s a lot to keep track of so to help you out, we’ve compiled a list of all of the confirmed games with free PS4 to PS5 upgrades. This list will continue to get upgraded as new announcements are made.

It’s worth noting that there are two PlayStation 5 consoles coming, one being the Digital Edition ($399.99). This is important to mention because if you purchase a physical version of any of the abovementioned games, you’ll only be able to play them on a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive (the $499.99 version).
If you own them digitally, you’ll be able to automatically download the digital versions of them on PlayStation 5 and be able to play them normally. In other words, owning the physical discs of those games does not entitle you to the digital download version. If you own the physical, you need to keep the disc and play it on the PlayStation 5with the disc drive.
