Madden 21 players on PS4 will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free

In officially revealing Madden 21 gameplay yesterday, we got confirmation that this year’s game will indeed be heading to PlayStation 5. The game releasing on Sony’s next-gen console was never really under question but people were wondering if EA would be offering a similar upgrade program from the PS4 to the PS5 as it is with Xbox One to Xbox Series X.

According to the PlayStation Store listing:

"Entitle for MADDEN NFL 21 PS4™ before the release of MADDEN NFL 22, and upgrade to MADDEN NFL 21 PS5™ at no additional cost."

Similar to Xbox, as long as you purchase Madden 21 and upgrade to the PS5 version before the release of Madden 22, you won’t need to pay extra. Madden 22 will likely release in August/September of 2021, so you’ll have quite a bit of time. EA is officially dubbing this Dual Entitlement, and you can read the fine print here.

EA released Madden 21’s first gameplay trailer yesterday but it was pretty light on actual gameplay. The PlayStation Store offers a bit more information, confirming the return of Face of the Franchise as well as X-Factor 2.0. There’s also talk of “innovative running enhancements” and “live playbooks.”

The trailer itself highlighted ball carrier skill stick, which looks to give more control when running with the ball;  new pass-rush control, enhanced defensive line mechanics that allow for a more responsive and  effective way to get to the quarterback (and strip the ball); realistic open field tackling, which should hopefully result in better tackling physics and clutch defensive stops; and user-controlled celebrations, which is probably the least exciting new “feature” but gives players a bit of personality and allows you to express yourself when scoring.

Overall, it seems like presentation has been the core focus of Madden 21 with EA’s goal to provide an authentic football experience. They promise new on field camera shots and improved player awareness.

Madden 21 will be available on August 28, 2020 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. There’s no release date for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions because the consoles themselves don’t have launch dates yet.
