Guy ‘Dr Disrespect’ Beahm speaks out in lengthy interview following Twitch ban

It has been nearly three weeks since news broke that Guy Beahm, aka Dr Disrespect, was banned from Twitch. One of the streaming platform’s most prominent personalities, his removal from Twitch came as a shock to the entire streaming community. What made the whole situation even more confusing was the fact that no reason was given for his ban.

The lack of answers sparked all sorts of theories speculating why he was banned. To this day, as far as we know, none of them are true and we still don’t know the cause. Even Beahm supposedly doesn’t know.

Since the ban, Beahm has been very quiet on social media. He hasn’t streamed. He hasn’t posted on social media, aside from the sole statement. It’s been complete radio silence — until this week. In a lengthy interview with PC Gamer, Beahm talked about the ban, his relationship with Twitch and what the future holds for the Dr Disrespect character.

For starters, Beahm reiterated that he still doesn’t know why Twitch banned him although I suspect him saying that has more to do with legal counsel. “I have to be careful here,” he told the website, which is part of the reason he hasn’t been shouting on social media.

"Uh, well, I mean, I’m trying to take the best and appropriate steps as possible, and there are things behind the scenes in terms from a legal standpoint that, you know, I can’t… that’s where it’s at. And so, I don’t want to go on social media and say the wrong thing or the right thing—or whatever it is—and, like, we made our statement. And that’s, you know, that’s where things are at now."

Beahm confirmed that he and his team are considering legal action against Twitch after the permanent ban but the entire situation seams fluid right now. Interestingly, there was a part of the interview where Beahm was asked about his sharing coronavirus conspiracies on steam and if Twitch had ever warned him about that or if he thinks that could be the cause for his removal from the platform.

While he flat out answered “no” as to the warning, his publicist sort of cut the rest off as to avoid “dangerous territory.” The publicist did add that there was “no formal warnings or reprimand on record.” This seems to suggest that Beahm perhaps does know the reasons for the ban but doesn’t want to say as to avoid any legal repercussions. Until this is sorted out legally in the court system, I doubt we’ll hear any formal explanation by either Beahm or Twitch.

As for the future of Dr Disrespect as a character, Beahm revealed he is working on the comeback which is great for his fans. He obviously has no plans to return to Twitch (nor do I think they’d allow him to) and said he has no interest in an exclusive partnership. He’s exploring his options but it sounds like whatever Beahm has planned will expand well beyond just streaming. He didn’t get into specifics but alluded to opening up the universe of Dr Disrespect.

"As we build this game plan to make this Doc comeback, that’s still kind of in the works in terms of what the vision looks like. I’m working with my creative team, the graphics, going and taking like the whole Doc 3.0 experience to the next level, and so that’s where my focus is now.… But when you start to look at potential projects outside of the streaming space, and then you combine those with the character in the streaming space, I think you’re gonna see his universe open up a lot bigger. And that’s probably the best way I could describe it."

Honestly, without knowing the behind-the-scenes details, all I can do is comment on Beahm’s handling of the situation, which seems very professional. If my entire career got thrown a wrench and I wasn’t given a reason (supposedly), I’d probably be a mess right now. But Beahm seems calm and collected, almost as if he expected this to happen one day.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know why Guy Beahm was banned from Twitch. We may never know the answer — at least not until the legal paperwork comes to light (if it gets that far). While Rod ‘Slasher’ Breslau claims to know the reason — but won’t share it due to fears it could make him the target of a defamation lawsuit — Beahm doesn’t seem at all interested in addressing speculation. He seems 100 percent committed to his community of fans which is honestly how it should be.
