Dr Disrespect’s permanent ban from Twitch remains a mystery.
By now, you’ve probably heard that Dr Disrespect has been permanently banned from Twitch. One of the platform’s most popular streamers with over 4 million followers, the sudden ban comes as a complete shock to the gaming community.
Dr Disrespect’s ban was actually first made public by StreamerBans, an automated Twitter account that tracks when streams get banned. The announcement was made on Friday, June 26 at 3:01 p.m.
Now, more than 24 hours later, we still don’t know why Dr Disrespect has been banned. Twitch has offered no reasoning for what is reportedly a permanent ban with a representative giving Polygon a generic PR statement:
As is our process, we take appropriate action when we have evidence that a streamer has acted in violation of our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. These apply to all streamers regardless of status or prominence in the community.
Dr Disrespect, whose real name is Guy Beahm, has also not publicly addressed his ban. His Twitch channel has been deactivated and refunds have reportedly started to go out to all of his Twitch subs. The Discord partnership has also been removed. His Twitter account and YouTube channel both remain active but it has been radio silence since the Twitch ban.
Beahm’s channel was previously banned for two weeks in June 2019 when he streamed footage from inside one of the bathrooms at the Los Angeles Convention Center during E3. Despite the controversial event, he remained one of the platform’s most popular streamers. In March 2020, He signed an exclusive, multiyear streaming contract with Twitch for what was reportedly “a lot of money.”
The banning of Beahm’s account comes at a very interesting time. This week, Twitch started banning accounts of high-profile streamers accused of sexual abuse and harassment. The platform issued this statement:
We want to provide an update on our investigations into the recent allegations of sexual abuse and harassment involving Twitch streamers and actions we’re taking. We are reviewing each case that has come to light as quickly as possible, while ensuring appropriate due diligence as we assess these serious allegations. We’ve prioritized the most severe cases and will begin issuing permanent suspensions in line with our findings immediately. In many of the cases, the alleged incident took place off Twitch, and we need more information to make a determination. In some cases we will need to report the case to the proper authorities who are better placed to conduct a more thorough investigation. For those who’ve come forward and would like to share additional information, and to anyone who hasn’t shared their experience and wants to do so, you can report confidentially through the reporting tools on each streamer’s channel page
Beahm’s ban doesn’t appear to be related to Twitch’s latest crackdown. Notable sports reporter Rod Breslau reported that the ban is “not DMCA” related. What’s truly frustrating is that Breslau apparently knows the reason but will not divulge the information due to “sensitivity” surrounding the subject.
The mystery surrounding Dr Disrespect’s sudden disappearance from Twitch has naturally sparked all sorts of speculation and theories. Fans have started to analyze Dr Disrespect’s final stream, noting particularly odd behavior in the closing moments of his final stream.
One of the most common theories being floated around right now is that Beahm was raided and arrested in the middle of the stream. However, there are currently no records of his arrest. The final 30 seconds in particular are certainly strange. Beahm is seen saying:
“We’ll… we’ll get through this champions. Life’s weird right now…. We’ll get through this okay. And uh… fu–!”
That’s when the stream cuts to some sort of Dr Disrespect promotion and we haven’t heard anything since. For now, Dr Disrespect’s banning from Twitch remains one of the gaming industry’s biggest mysteries.
