The most recent Nintendo Direct on February 8 featured many announcements about many games, in all under 45 minutes. One of the bigger announcements made was that Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games are all now playable on the Nintendo Switch. After rumors of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games coming to the Switch for over a year, those rumors can be laid to rest. This is great news for gamers who don’t want to bust out their old Game Boy. Now, you can play some of your favorite old school classics on the TV in your living room.

If this news intrigues you and you want to start playing your favorite Game Boy games, you first got to make sure you have Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo Switch Online costs only $20 for an entire year. If you already have Nintendo Switch Online and are looking to play some of your favorite Game Boy/Game Boy Color games, it gets even simpler.

All you have to do is go to the store on your Switch and search for Game Boy. A Game Boy Nintendo Switch download should pop up that, when downloaded, will allow you to play Game Boy Games. Unfortunately, not all Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are available to play, but there are some great ones that are available to play right now.

Game Boy and Game Boy Color Games that are available on Nintendo Switch

  • Tetris
  • Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
  • Gargoyle’s Quest
  • Game & Watch Gallery 3
  • Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
  • Metroid 2: Return of Samus
  • Wario Land 3
  • Kirby’s Dream Land

While there are currently only nine Game Boy and Game Boy Color games that you can play right now, I am highly confident that Nintendo will be adding many more in the near future. If you are wondering why I haven’t made mention of any Game Boy Advance games as of yet, that is because those are a little bit of a different story.

If you are looking to play Game Boy Advance games on your Nintendo Switch, you are going to need more than just an online subscription. You are going to need to purchase a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription and the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass, which costs an additional $29.99 per year. If you are an avid Nintendo gamer, the extra $29.99 is well worth the price. Included in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass is a huge library of Nintendo 64 games, SEGA Genesis games, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass, and now Game Boy Advance games, along with so much more. The true gaming value purchase if you are looking to play some great Nintendo Classics.

Yes, the list is smaller, but it will continue to grow over time. At the end of the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance announcement trailer, Nintendo gives us an insight into some of the great games we can expect to see in the future. Those games are Metroid Fusion, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Fire Emblem, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, and Golden Sun.
