As the NFL has shifted to more of a passing league, having a solid, shutdown corner is more important than ever. With EA having already revealed this year’s best wide receivers, it’s time to look at the guys who will be covering them.

Today’s focus for Madden Ratings Week is on the secondary, but here we’re specifically looking at cornerbacks.

Best cornerbacks in Madden 23 at launch

  1. Jalen Ramsey (LA Rams) – 98 OVR
  2. Jaire Alexander (Green Bay Packers) – 94 OVR
  3. Tre’davious White (Buffalo Bills) – 93 OVR
  4. Darius Slay Jr. (Philadelphia Eagles) – 92 OVR
  5. Denzel Ward (Cleveland Browns) – 92 OVR
  6. Marshon Lattimore (New Orleans Saints) – 91 OVR
  7. Stephon Gilmore (Indianapolis Colts) – 91 OVR
  8. J.C. Jackson (LA Chargers) – 90 OVR
  9. Marlon Humphrey (Baltimore Ravens) – 90 OVR
  10. A.J. Terrell Jr. (Atlanta Falcons) – 89 OVR

Jalen Ramsey at the top isn’t at all a surprise. He’s the best cornerback in the league, hands down. But the ratings reveal wasn’t without a bit of controversy as many feel Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard was slighted in this year’s ratings. Howard checks in with an 89 overall, which technically makes him tied for 10th best in this year’s game. But even so, 89 feels a bit low for a cornerback that many consider to be one of the top five in the league.

Of course, it’s not just about overall in Madden. Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, for instance, is rated just an 84 overall. Diggs get a lot of flack for the number of yards he gives up in coverage, but he also led the league with 11 interceptions last season. So while his overall is a bit low, he’s actually the cornerback with the best Catch rating (85) in this year’s game. Behind him is Xavien Howard with an 84 Catch rating.

Then, of course, certain cornerbacks thrive in different areas of coverage. Jalen Ramsey is ranked No. 1 in both Man and Zone Coverage with 98 and 99 rating, respectively. However, Jaire Alexander is the second best man cornerback with a 96 Man Coverage rating, while Darius Slay Jr. is the second best zone cornerback with a 98 Zone Coverage rating.
