The first day of ESPN’s Madden Ratings Week was focused on the player ratings for receivers in Madden 23. These days, the word “receiver” often includes tight ends as the position has evolved quite a bit over the past decade.

Tight ends now play a big part in a team’s passing offense as the matchups often provide a physical advantage. Tight ends are often too big for cornerbacks and often too fast for linebackers, giving the the best players a huge matchup advantage.

While there are a ton of very good tight ends, capable of catching passes, there are only a few elite ones in the league presently. And it’s the names we’ve heard for years.

EA’s top rated tight ends for Madden 23 at launch shouldn’t really shock anyone as it’s been this way for quite a while. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce returns but with a 98 overall rating, taking him out of Madden’s illustrious 99 Club. Current 99 Club members include Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams and San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams. There will probably be a few more revealed before the end of Ratings Week.

The top five tight ends in Madden 23 at launch are rounded out by George Kittle (San Francisco 49ers), Mark Andrews (Baltimore Ravens), Darren Waller (Las Vegas Raiders) and T.J. Hockenson (Detroit Lions).

Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts, who many believe will be the next superstar tight end, checks in with a 87 overall rating. Pitts had a solid rookie campaign with 68 receptions, 1,026 yards and 1 touchdowns. If he can improve on these numbers, Pitts could find himself in the top five for position ratings before the end of the year.
