Horizon Forbidden West PS4 to PS5 upgrade explained
This week, gamers could begin pre-order Horizon Forbidden West for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. As Sony revealed, there are all sorts so different editions to choose from; however, if you’re wondering about Dual Entitlement — the ability to upgrade from PS4 to PS5 for free — that’s where things get a little bit more complicated.
Sony has already confirmed Dual Entitlement does not apply to the standard and Special Editions of Horizon Forbidden West. There’s been a tremendous backlash to this surrounding, so it’s possible Sony could reverse course, but also unlikely.
So if you want to upgrade the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West to the PS5 version, you’ll need to purchase the Digital Deluxe ($79.99), Collector’s ($199.99) or Regalla Editions ($259.99). Obviously, the latter two editions are meant for the more passionate fans who want all the extra collectible goodies, and Dual Entitlement is just a throw-in.

Your cheapest path to upgrade from PS4 to PS5 is with the Digital Deluxe version. But Sony is displaying a bit of greed here. Rather than simply paying the $10 price difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions, you’re forced to pay what is essentially $10 more than what the PS5 version would cost on its own.
This is particularly upsetting because a lot of people who want to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 simply can’t due to supply issues. So now they’ll be forced to choose between getting the PS4 version at launch and then paying full price for the PS5 game if they do happen to luck into getting a PlayStation 5 console. Or they can wait to buy the game until they do buy a PlayStation 5, and then they can simply buy the next-gen version. Or, you pay the extra price for convenience. None of it is ideal.
That being said, you don’t have to upgrade in order to play your PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West on PS5. The new hardware should still play the last-gen version, but you won’t experience any of the next-gen version’s perks. You’ll simply be playing your PS4 game on the PS5.
Horizon Forbidden West is set to launch on February 18, 2022. Which version will you be playing?
