While we’re all counting down the days until DICE reveals the new Battlefield game, EA has, in the meanwhile, given us a release window for the latest installment in the blockbuster shooter franchise.

During a slide presentation accompanying its earnings results today, EA featured a release calendar for the rest of the fiscal year. Battlefield was listed under “Q3,” which puts its release sometime between October and December of 2021.

This probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as Battlefield is typically a holiday blockbuster that releases in competition with Call of Duty. Of course, this year it’s a bit different as this will be the first new Battlefield game to release since Battlefield 5 in September 2018.

It’s also the first Battlefield game that will be releasing on next-gen consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. For those who haven’t yet jumped to the next gen, either by choice or by limited supply, EA had a bit of good news for you. Battlefield will also be releasing on “current-gen,” which is basically the last-gen PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Hopefully, the fact that Battlefield 6 is being developed for both next-gen and current/last-gen doesn’t limit its potential. EA seems bullish that the game will be “great” on both console generations, but we all know it will be judged most critically for how it looks and performs on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Yes, I know a very large number of gamers are still playing on the older PlayStation and Xbox, but a lot of next-gen console owners are eager to see the power of these systems put to use. For what it’s worth, EA brass had nothing glowing things to say about the game’s potential on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. But would we honestly expect them to be fairly critical during an earnings call with investors?

As for when we’ll get to see the new Battlefield, it’s slated to be revealed in June. And EA also just announced plans to host its annual EA Play Live this July, where we’ll likely get a more extended look at the game.
