It’s been over two years since the release of Battlefield V. And while the game has been supported with updates since it first launched in November 2018, fans are understandably ready for a new installment. Thankfully, the wait won’t be that much longer.

We’ve known that EA has been developing a new Battlefield game for release this holiday season and it sounds like the publisher is gearing up for the big reveal. We don’t know when exactly, but EA says it will happen “soon.”

As if the long wait for a new Battlefield hasn’t built up enough hype for this year’s game, EA is setting big expectations themselves. In today’s announcement, DICE confirmed: “We have our biggest team ever on a Battlefield game for console and PC.” This includes Criterion, DICE LA and the team in Gothenburg.

Why the need for such a large team? Well, it sounds like this Battlefield will be the biggest and boldest game in the franchise yet.

DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson threw around a lot of hype buzzwords when describing this year’s Battlefield.

"I can tell you it is a bold step. It has everything we love about Battlefield – and takes all of it to the next level. Epic scale. All-out military warfare. Crazy, unexpected moments. Game-changing destruction. Massive battles, packed with more players and mayhem than ever before. All brought to life with the power of next-gen consoles and PCs."

That’s quite a description. The Battlefield games have always been known for their epic scale and all-out military warfare, so it’s not too surprising to hear those descriptions thrown around for this year’s game. But, this is also the first Battlefield that will be released on next-gen consoles, so I’m eager to see how DICE harnesses this new tech they have at their disposal. Battlefield has always thrived on PC, but it’s the console versions I’m most excited to see. How will the Frostbite engine improve with the PS5 and Xbox Series X?

Battlefield V was first revealed in May 2018, so it’s likely that this year’s Battlefield will be revealed in the coming weeks. And then I’m sure we’ll see more of it this summer if EA hosts its annual EA Play Live event.

It sounds like the game is pretty far along, with Gabrielson confirming they are in “daily playtesting mode” right now. This includes polishing, balancing and “making the best possible Battlefield game we can.”
