Marvel’s Avengers: How to upgrade from PS4 to PS5 for free
The next-gen version of Marvel’s Avengers is slated to release this month, and those who already own the game on PlayStation 4 will be eligible for a free upgrade.
Because Marvel’s Avengers was released in August, it was one of those games that fell within that awkward transition period. It came towards the start of a new console generation, but Square Enix likely wanted it to sell well on PlayStation 4.
So Square Enix is doing what many other publishers have done for games in a similar situation. If you own the game on PlayStation 4, you can upgrade for free to the PlayStation 5 version when it launches on March 18. Some publishers have charged a $10 upgrade fee to go from PS4 to PS5, so the fact that current players can upgrade for free is a nice perk.
Because there are two editions of the PlayStation 5 — one with a disc drive and one without — there are some upgrade specifics to keep a note of. If you are upgrading from a PlayStation 4 disc, you’ll obviously need the PlayStation 5 console with a disc drive. I’m assuming the upgrade process will be like other disc-based games. You insert the disc into the PS5 console and you’ll get to download a digital version of the PS5 game. There was no mention of being able to upgrade from a PS4 disc if you own the PS5 Digital Edition.

That said, if you own a digital version of Marvel’s Avengers on PS4, then it doesn’t really matter what PS5 console edition you own. The game is already in your digital library, so you’ll be able to download the PS5 version regardless of whether you own a PS5 with a disc drive or not.
The PS5 version of Marvel’s Avengers arrives on March 18, the same day as the next major DLC, Operation: Hawkeye – Future Imperfect. The next-gen version of the game offers higher framerates and enhanced visuals, including up to 4K resolution on PS5. Players can also expect faster loading and streaming times as well as higher-resolution textures, farther draw distances, and improved particle effects.
If you do upgrade from PS4 to PS5, Marvel’s Avengers will support profile and save game transfers. Additionally, cross-gen play is supported so you don’t have to worry about leaving any friends behind.
