Earlier this month, Sony San Diego promised we’d get our first bit of news for MLB The Show 21 in February. Thanks to a recent GameStop leak, some of that news may have been spoiled. Reddit user bobbysq scoured GameStop’s media assets and discover two very big pieces of news.

For one, it appears MLB The Show 21 will be releasing for Xbox consoles in addition to PlayStation. The leak revealed covers for the PS4 and PS5 as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

This bit was expected as Sony, Sony San Diego, MLB and MLB Players Association, previously announced that MLB The Show would expand to additional console platforms beyond PlayStation “as early as 2021.” Specific platforms were never announced, but it was presumed that Xbox would be among them.

No covers for the Nintendo Switch or PC were discovered, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the game won’t be coming to these platforms. Nintendo originally responded to last year’s announcement, which suggested that the Switch would be among the new homes for MLB The Show.

Maybe they just couldn’t find a cover or maybe a Switch version of the game will come at a later date. Given that the Switch is vastly underpowered compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, maybe porting it to Nintendo’s hybrid console takes a bit more work. Or maybe a port is being handled by another developer. Or maybe this year’s game simply won’t make it to Nintendo’s platform.

The other major discovery in this leak was the cover athlete. It appears that San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will be the cover athlete for MLB The Show 21 across all platforms. Honestly, this is probably the least surprising news as it was widely expected that the 22-year-old phenom would grace the cover.

After a breakout rookie season in which he hit 3217 with 22 home runs and 53 RBIs, Tatis Jr. followed up with another impressive sophomore season. In the shortened 2020 season, Tatis Jr. hit .277 with 17 home runs and 45 RBIs in 59 games. While he didn’t lead the league in any major statistical categories, he was among the top in each of them.

Tatis Jr. is one of the most exciting up-and-coming players and his spot on the cover of MLB The Show 21 is well-deserved. Sony San Diego has yet to make its official announcement yet, but I expect they’ll do so sooner rather than later. Hopefully, we also get to see a trailer in addition to confirmation of the cover athlete and platforms. Meanwhile, White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson was recently revealed as the cover athlete for R.B.I. Baseball 21.
