Wukong is the 50th playable champion in League of Legends: Wild Rift, Riot’s mobile spinoff of its popular MOBA.

The roster of playable champions for League of Legends: Wild Rift is now officially at 50, with today’s release of Wukong, the Monkey King. Riot had previously announced Wukong as the next release and today he became available.

An overview video showcasing Wukong’s gameplay reveals he’s fairly similar to his PC counterpart. We know one of the challenges with bringing characters over from LoL on PC to Wild Rift is ensuring their ability kit feels good on mobile.

Wukong seems like a pretty straightforward port. Except for his passive, all of his abilities seem the same as his PC version.

“Golden Staff” for all intents and purposes is the same as his Q (Crushing Blow). It gives him added range and empowers his next attack. Warrior Trickster is the same as he dashes and becomes invisible while creating a clone. Numbus Strike sees him and his clones dash forward and deal damage. His ultimate, Cyclone, is also the same; he spins his staff and knocks up enemies.

The only real change is with his passive. On PC, it’s Stone Skin, and Wukong gains stacking armor and max health regeneration. In Wild Rift, it’s called Crushing Blows and he applies stacks for bonus damage.

More from League of Legends

To celebrate Wukong’s arrival, Wild Rift is hosting “Wukong’s Challenge.” This is a limited-time series of Wukong-focused objectives. Only one event mission is available at a time. You must complete it to earn the associated reward and unlock the next task.

It kicks off with “Fight Me!” which challenges you to deal 50,000 damage to enemy champions. There are a total of 7 objectives with the final, “A Difficult Lesson,” rewarding you with Wukong. Wukong’s Challenge runs from December 25, 2020 through January 1, 2021.

Wukong is one of three champions coming to Wild Rift. As Riot also revealed, Noxian champions Darius and Draven will also be debuting with this patch, although they aren’t quite ready yet. Like Wukong, Darius excels as a solo top laner, meanwhile, Draven is an excellent marksman.

League of Legends: Wild Rift is still in open beta in select regions. Unfortunately, it’s still not available in the United States and probably won’t be until early 2021.
