Cyberpunk 2077 releases on December 10 and while it will be playable on the PlayStation 5, it’s not the specific PS5 version.

Cyberpunk 2077 was originally supposed to release earlier this year but because of numerous setbacks, it officially releases on December 10. The delays also mean it’s releasing just shortly after the launch of Sony’s next-gen system, the PlayStation 5. As previously explained, the version of Cyberpunk 2077 releasing this week is for the PlayStation 4. So when can we expect CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated RPG to arrive on PS5?

While we don’t have an exact date, we do have a timeframe and, unfortunately, it’s a little bit away. According to business development boss Michal Nowakowski:

"“When it comes to a proper, full-blown next-gen version, that’s going to come later.”"

Nowakowski didn’t give a specific date but a 2021 release for the PS5 version seems most realistic.

In the meantime, PS5 owners can still enjoy playing Cyberpunk 2077 on their new console thanks to backward compatibility. The game will even get a performance boost due to the improved hardware. Specific enhancements haven’t been detailed, but one could expect faster load times and improved frame rates on the PS5 compared to the PS4.

As for the “full-blown next-gen version,” we’ll have to wait patiently. It could be next year, or it could be longer. We all saw know how meticulous CD Projekt Red can be with their games (and they are better for it), so let’s just enjoy the PS4 version for now while we wait for the next-gen version to arrive.

The good news is that when the PlayStation 5-specific version of  Cyberpunk 2077 does release, those who own the PS4 version will be able to upgrade for free. Also, any save files you have from the PlayStation 4 version will be compatible with the PS5 version so you’ll be able to pick up the game at the same point you left off, as long as you’re using the same PlayStation account.

Cyberpunk 2077 has received mixed reviews so far with critics lamenting the number of bugs present. Hopefully, when the game does release on PS5 those bugs will be a thing of the past.
