Cyberpunk 2077 will release first on PS4 but thanks to backwards compatibility you will be able to play on PS5 with cross-saves enabled.

After numerous delays, Cyberpunk 2077 will finally release on December 10. For real, this time.

The highly anticipated RPG was originally supposed to release in April 2020 but was delayed to September and then again to November before finally settling on a December 10th release. Because of all the delays, the game, which was supposed to release well before the PlayStation 5’s launch, lands in an awkward space as some gamers are upgrading to the next generation.

The Cyberpunk 2077 that releases on December 10 is the PlayStation 4 version of the game. However, thanks to the backward compatibility functionality of the PS5, you’ll be able to enjoy the game on your next-gen console if you’ve upgraded consoles.

Additionally, CD Projekt Red has also confirmed that the PS4 and PS5 will support cross-save functionality.

"If you are playing the game on PlayStation 4, you will be able to continue playing it on PlayStation 5 with backwards compatibility. This also means your save files from the PlayStation 4 will be compatible and you will be able to pick up the game at the same point where you’ve left off (as long as you are using the same PlayStation account)."

So let’s say you have a PS4 but are thinking about upgrading to a PS5 sometime in the near future (like when they are in stock again). You’ll be able to play on your PS4 and then carry your progress over to the PS5 when you do eventually buy one.

CD Projekt Red actually posted directions to do so and it’s quite easy.

Ready for the best news now? There is no cost to upgrade from the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 to the PS5 version. CD Projekt Red announced back in June that a specific version of Cyberpunk 2077, “taking full advantage of the next-gen hardware,” will be available for free.

The PlayStation 5-specific version of Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have an exact release date but will launch at some point in 2021. In the meantime, you’ll be playing the PS4 version; however, the PS5’s improved hardware should at least result in somewhat of a better performance in the meantime. And with the guarantee that your progress will carry over, you’ve got nothing to worry about.
