Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on December 10. Here’s how CD Projekt Red is handling its release across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

On December 10, CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, will finally release. The long-awaited title was originally supposed to release in April of this year, but numerous delays pushed it back.

The result is a somewhat awkward release window as it arrives alongside the launch of Microsoft’s next-gen console. But CDPR and Microsoft are doing everything they can to ensure a simplified release regardless of what console you’re playing on or plan to play on in the coming weeks and months.

Despite releasing shortly after the Xbox Series X launch, the version of Cyberpunk 2077 coming on December 10 is actually the last-gen (Xbox One/PS4) version. However, thanks to the backward compatibility feature in next-gen consoles, it’s playable on Xbox Series X and S (or PS5).

So regardless of which console you own — Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S — you’ll be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. And while it’s not an exclusive “next-gen” game, the hardware of the Xbox Series X|S will improve the game’s performance compared to last-gen.

So let’s say you currently own an Xbox One and buy Cyberpunk 2077 but you plan on upgrading to the Xbox Series X|S in the future. Good news, you’ve got nothing to worry about!

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk will support cross-save and cross-progression across console generations within the same family. So if you start playing on Xbox One, you can continue your progress on Xbox Series X|S. While the same is true of the PS4 and PS5, Microsoft’s process for cross-save is actually much easier — it doesn’t even require you to do anything.

Thanks to Microsoft’s Smart Delivery, your data is uploaded to the cloud (assuming you’re connected to the internet). So once you boot up your Xbox Series X and connect it to the internet, your save should automatically be pulled in. If you don’t use the cloud, you can connect both your Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S to the same network and use the system network transfer option.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on December 10. According to CDPR, a “later upgrade” to the game will be available for free. This will take “full advantage of next-gen hardware.” Basically, if you buy the game for Xbox One, you’ll be able to download this upgrade that should drastically improve the game for next-gen consoles.
