PlayStation 5 Showcase: Will Sony announce the PS5 price and release date?
The PlayStation 5 Showcase is being held today but will we finally learn the price or release date of the PS5?
Today is the day. We may or may not learn the price and or release date of the PlayStation 5. As I’m sure we’re all well aware, the PS5 Showcase is today and the biggest question surrounding the event is whether or not we’ll get answers to two of the biggest questions heading into next-gen.
For what it’s worth, Sony had made no mention of either when announcing today’s Showcase, stating only that it’ll be 40 minutes in length and feature updates from the various studios working on PS5 games. There wasn’t even mention as to whether or not they’ll be specific launch titles because right now we don’t even know when the PlayStation 5 is launching — other than “holiday 2020.”
I’m not convinced either question will be answered during the livestream because I’m not entirely sure Sony knows the answers. Just earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Sony had cut its PlayStation 5 forecast due production issues with its custom-designed system-on-chip. Sony maintains its holiday 2020 launch window, but perhaps these production issues are preventing the company from announcing a specific date.

Despite Sony denying the report, I still don’t think we’ll learn when the PlayStation 5 will release quite yet.
As for pricing, I think Sony knows what it has to do to be competitive with Microsoft, who recently announced the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will be priced at $499 and $299 respectively. The question is whether or not they can get the price down to that level. Rumors have it that Microsoft will be taking a loss with each next-gen Xbox sold. Is Sony willing to do the same with the PlayStation 5?
I think there’s still so much uncertainty and fluidity with the production process of the PS5 that, unfortunately, we shouldn’t expect any sort of launch details. Hopefully we at least learn what games will be available when the PS5 does release though.
