The Builder Base is getting some much-needed attention in the Clash of Clans Spring 2020 update, but not all of the changes are met with enthusiasm.

Well, what are the odds? Just a day after speculating that a new Clash of Clans update could arrive this month, Supercell has gone ahead and confirmed that the Spring 2020 update — the first major update of the year — will be arriving.

Rather than just confirming that the update is in the works, the developer gave us a sneak peek at one of the major focal points: the Builder Base. While no new units or buildings were revealed, the sneak peek focuses more on some quality of life changes and improvements that will be coming.

Here are some of the big changes coming to Builder Base with the Spring update, including our thoughts on them:

"Troop Training Times Removed! We have removed training times from Troops in the Builder Base. All training will now happen immediately. Yes you read that right…IMMEDIATELY.Battle Machine healing time has been removed as well!Even if your Builder Base Barracks are under upgrade, now you will still be able to train troops!"

This is one of my favorite changes coming in the update. Currently, after an attack it takes a couple of minutes for new Troops to be trained. This results in some boring downtime. Builder Base is sort of designed as a smaller side game, so there really wasn’t much sense in making players wait for new Troops to train. Attacking is one of the most fun aspects about Builder Base, so being able to do so without waiting is a good change.

"As for the Clock Tower…Clock Tower multiplier has been increased from 8x to 10x.Clock Tower boost duration has been increased from 3-11 minutes to 14-30 minutes (Clock Tower Potion’s duration remains at 30 minutes).Clock Tower boost cooldown time has been increased from 7 hours to 22 hours. The Gem cost to refresh the Clock Tower cooldown has been reduced."

The Clock Tower was previously mostly used for boosting Troop training; however, with Troop training time removed, the focus will now be on boosting building and resource generation. Increasing the boost duration and cooldown time means less micromanaging your Builder Base. Again, it’s a quality of life improvement that frees up more of your time for battling.

Plus, logging in every seven hours to maximize your Clock Tower boost potential was just tedious. I’m all for streamlining this sort of feature for casuals like myself.

"New Versus Battle Tiebreaker!Builder Base will now have an additional tiebreaker. If both Stars and % Destruction are equal and the % Destruction is above 0%, the player with more time left will be crowned as the winner."

This is easily the most controversial change to Builder Base. Tiebreakers have been a topic of discussion for quite a while now and Supercell initially seemed to be against the notion that there should always be a winner. For whatever reason, they’ve come around to the idea.

Of course, how to determine a winner for a tiebreaker was another point of contention with pros and cons for every idea thrown out there. It’s interesting that they went with the “time left” option as this could be viewed as limiting potential attack strategies. Many view this as a versus battle becoming a racing battle.

I don’t know if the community will ever come to an agreement with how ties should be resolved, but this is the way for at least the time being.  What are your thoughts on versus battle tiebreakers for Builder Base?

Supercell didn’t announce when the Spring update for Clash of Clans will arrive but looking back on last year, we should expect it around the end of March. In addition to Builder Base changes, the update will have “exciting super new content” as well as additional quality of life improvements based on community feedback.
