Godfall: What we know about the first announced PS5 game
Revealed at The Game Awards, Godfall is the first game to be officially announced for the PlayStation 5. Here’s everything we know about it.
While Sony has yet to officially unveil the PlayStation 5 — offering only nuggets of information via exclusive interviews — that didn’t stop Gearbox Publishing and developer Counterplay Games from announcing the first game for the PS5. Godfall was revealed at The Game Awards 2019 and is the first confirmed game for the PlayStation 5.
Yes, it’s hard to believe that after just seven years, the PlayStation 4 lifecycle is coming to an end. Next holiday season, a good portion of the PlayStation community will be gaming on the PS5 and one of those games could very well be Godfall.
Anyone who has played any of the Borderlands games, another Gearbox franchise, is probably familiar with the phrase “looter-shooter.” The franchise essentially defined the genre, which involves, well, shooting tons of enemies and gathering tons of varied loot.
Well, Godfall is being billed as a “fantasy looter-slasher.” Swap out the sci-fi setting of Borderlands for a fantasy one and replace the bajillion guns with a bajillion of melee-focused weapons, and that’s basically what Godfall will be. The game’s website urges players to “chase legendary weapons and armor.”

A cinematic reveal trailer gave us our first look at the overall concept of Godfall and while it was impressive, it didn’t really offer us a look at the actual game. Again, the game’s website offers some details, teasing “high-impact combat” with third-person melee action.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Counterplay Games CEO Keith Lee explained that the game has been designed to focus on offensive gameplay “uniquely one-part gear driven and one-part player-skill driven.” He also mentioned “one-against-many enemy encounters” and “challenging head-to-head boss fights.” Again, this sounds very close to what is offered through Borderlands.
There’s also the mention of multiplayer. Godfall will support solo, duo or trio co-op gameplay. Why they opted to go with three instead of four, like Borderlands offers, is unknown to me, but perhaps it’s a gameplay balancing decision. Personally, I’m not really a fan of the three-player co-op format.
Unlike Borderlands, however, Godfall appears to have a much more mature tone. It wasn’t dark, per se. I got more of a kind of Michael Bay Transformer‘s feel from it. It was more grand than anything.
