Will Destiny 3 release in 2020? Here’s what Bungie says

With Bungie having obtained publishing rights from Activision for Destiny moving forward, can we expect Destiny 3 to be released in 2020?

2019 was a big year for Bungie. The studio behind both the Halo and Destiny franchises ended its 10-year publishing partnership with Activision. While the initial deal already allowed Bungie ownership over any new intellectual property created by the studio, they also obtained publishing rights for the Destiny franchise moving forward.

Naturally, fans expected an announcement for Destiny 3. Instead, the studio talked about a “new era” for Destiny 2 and unveiled Seasons for the online multiplayer shooter.

Despite the turnaround we’ve seen for Destiny 2, it’s hard to imagine a future in which Bungie doesn’t release, at some point, a Destiny 3. Bungie Communications Director David ‘DeeJ’ Dague was asked about the future of the Destiny series, specifically a third installment.

Unfortunately, his answer, while hinting at some exciting developments, pretty much confirms Destiny 3 won’t be released in 2020. Here’s what he told PCGamesN:

"“I don’t have any good announcements to make about the next bold moves we’ll make in the franchise. Right now our commitment and our attention is to make the seasons that will unfold over the course of the next year interesting and sustain a perennial story arc that will keep players engaged. I understand the question you’re asking and it’s certainly an interesting one, and we’ll have a lot of cool stuff to say on that later, but I’m afraid that moment will have to wait a little bit longer.”"

While we’re all eagerly awaiting to see what Bungie does with Destiny on their own, it seems like the studio is in no rush to pump out a third game. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think we’d all rather them take their time and deliver a game that lives up to the promises they made a decade ago.

Although Destiny and Destiny 2 are fun, polished games, there’s no denying there is some disappointment with the franchise. Some of that can probably be attributed to Activision, but now that Bungie is free and calling the shots, I think they are less concerned about microtransactions and milking players for all they’ve got.

I think if they are to deliver a Destiny 3, they want it built on firm ground so that they can continue to expand on the franchise for years to come. The last thing fans want to see is another development debacle, as we witnessed with the original Destiny back in 2014.

Yes, Destiny 2 improved upon a lot of the issues with the first game, but it still left much to be desired. Hopefully, when Destiny 3 does arrive — whenever that may be — it’s finally the game we all envisioned.

And remember, although Destiny 3 probably won’t be released in 2020, there’s nothing in Dague’s statement that suggests we won’t get some sort of announcement next year. Perhaps Bungie will be ready to talk about the next installment later in the year at E3.
