Apple Arcade adds new sports game Ultimate Rivals: The Rink
By Lance Liebl
Apple has launched Ultimate Rivals, a new arcade sports games franchise on Apple Arcade where you play as real-life athletes across different sports in fast-paced hockey action.
If you were looking for a new sports game to play on your iPhone, you’re about to be very happy. Apple has a new addition to the very-worthwhile Apple Arcade subscription. This week, they released Ultimate Rivals: the Rink from Bit Fry Game Studios, Inc., a new sports gaming franchise where you’ll play as real-life athletes from different sports in a hockey rink.
This arcade-style gameplay has you combining athletes from different sports — JuJu Smith-Schuster (NFL), Alex Morgan (USWNT), Wayne Gretzky (retired NHL), Jose Altuve (MLB) and more — in 3-on-3 hockey. You assign a player to goalie and two others as skaters (wing and center), with athletes skills in their sports translating to hockey. Athletes also have Ultimate Abilities; these are powerful moves that can turn the tide of the game.

Bit Fry Game Studios, Inc. prioritized 60-frames-per-second with Ultimate Rivals: The Rink, as well as quick game sessions. The action is fast and it can be hard to keep track of your players at times, but it’s stylish and easy to pick up and play. While the game is obviously built for touch controls, there are options for Bluetooth controllers as well.
You start off with Justin Turner, Aleksander Barkov, Patrick Mahomes and Lebron James on your roster. You can play in single-player or multiplayer matches to unlock more athletes. Other athletes include Megan Rapinoe, Drew Brees, Noah Syndergaard, James Harden, Patrick Kane, Elena Delle Donne and Russell Wilson in a roster of almost 60. Licensing agreements with nine professional sports organizations ensure that more athletes will be coming to Ultimate Rivals.
Even if you’re not a hockey fan, there’s fun to be had here. And according to Apple, Ultimate Rivals: The Rink will be followed by Ultimate Rivals: The Court in spring 2020. It wasn’t said whether your unlocked athletes will carry over to their basketball game, but better safe than sorry.
