Is EA trying to gauge interest in the Titanfal franchise by making Titanfal 2 free through PS Plus for the month of December 2019?

Thanks to the booming success of Apex Legends, Titanfall 2 has kind of fallen by the wayside. It’s unclear when we’ll get a third installment of the sci-fi multiplayer shooter, as EA is all-in on its battle royale spinoff, but perhaps the publisher is gauging interest in the franchise through PS Plus.

Titanfall 2 is the highlight of next month’s free PlayStation Plus games, arriving alongside Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame. Respawn Entertainment’s intense first-person shooter blends high-speed mobility with powerful war machines, referred to as Titans.

Though Titanfall 2 was critically acclaimed at launch, sales for the sequel never quite lived up to EA’s expectations. But the gameplay and mechanics were some of the smoothest the genre has seen and Respawn had made vast improvements over its predecessor (like the addition of a single-player campaign). But for whatever reason, Titanfall 2 didn’t sell well so EA encouraged Respawn to basically take those same mechanics and tweak them a bit to create Apex Legends, a free-to-play battle royale game and one of the few that has been able to compete on the level of Fortnite.

During last month’s earnings call, EA reiterated that they are “hyper-focused” on Apex Legends right now. But I always believe that games offered via PS Plus are done so for a reason. In some cases, they are made free to familiarize players with a franchise before a new installment releases.

I don’t necessarily think that’s the case here with Titanfall 2 as EA offered no timeframe on when a new game will come. In fact, the success of Apex Legends actually caused Respawn Entertainment to push back its Titanfall plans.

But perhaps maybe EA is offering Titanfall 2 through PlayStation Plus as a way to familiarize people with the franchise. In terms of gameplay mechanics, Titanfall 2 is among the best for first-person shooters. I honestly do believe that people would agree if they had played it. Perhaps this is what EA is banking on; make the game free through PlayStation Plus, grow a community and get some new players on board, and then announce Titanfall 3.

As far as Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame, well, I know nothing about it. It’s a motorbike racing game with the ability to customize bikes and riders and create our own custom tracks. That’s cool if you’re into that sort of thing, but it seems like a pretty niche genre.

In any case, both games will be available for PS Plus subscribers between December 3 and January 6. I seriously recommend you download Titanfall 2 and see what all the hype is about, especially if you enjoy Apex Legends.
