During EA’s earnings call, the company offered a glimpse into the future which includes more Apex Legends and Star Wars as well as a new Battlefield and Dragon Age.

EA reported a strong second quarter thanks, in part, to its growing EA Sports titles, including Madden and FIFA. But the publisher has a large catalog of franchises outside of sports and it was during their earnings call that we learned about the future of some of them.

From a possible Titanfall 3 to the next Battlefield and Dragon Age, here’s what EA had to say about the future of some of their popular franchises.

Titanfall 3 / Apex Legends

Despite being well-received by players, the Titanfall franchise has never been particularly lucrative for EA. But the lore of the universe and the tight gunplay and mechanics helped spark Apex Legends, which has blown up in popularity.

With a community over of over 70 million players, the free-to-play Apex Legends is now a “longer-term franchise” for EA. With plans to bring it to mobile devices and to audiences across Asia, as well as launching a competitive program for the battle royale game, what does this mean for the future of Titanfall?

Well, the good news is, Titanfall is still considered its own standalone franchise. And while we very well might get a Titanfall 3 in the future, EA reiterated that they are “hyper focused” on Apex Legends because of its potential opportunity. So, unfortunately, we have no timeframe of if or when a new Titanfall game will come, but EA assured “it’s still a great brand and we certainly won’t forget about it down the road.”

Battlefield

EA confirmed that the next Battlefield game will arrive in Fiscal Year 2022 (sometime between April 2021 and March 2022).

Battlefield V released in 2018, so it seems fans will be waiting a little longer than usual for a new installment in the franchise. Typically the Battlefield games release on a bi-yearly schedule, which should’ve put the next Battlefield game on track for 2020. Instead, it looks like a fall 2021 release date is more likely. Or at the very latest — and I’m sure investors won’t like this — a spring 2022 release.

Either way, a new Battlefield game is in development and EA said it is targeting “new innovation that will be enabled by next-gen platforms and a growing install base on new consoles.” Perhaps the reason for the longer wait is so that the new consoles can establish this install base first. Reports also indicate that this new Battlefield game will also be available for the Xbox One and PS4.

Dragon Age 4

Looking further down the line, EA said a new Dragon Age game is in the works and will “probably” arrive after fiscal year 2022. Q4 2022 ends on March 31, 2022, so I guess any time after that is in fair play.

A is expecting to release a new Star Wars game before April 2022, while Dragon Age fans may have to wait until after March 2022 for the next entry in the franchise.

EA’s Blake Jorgensen said:

"But, you know, we typically don’t give multiyear guidance this early in the year or multiyear guidance period. So I don’t want to start giving ’23 guidance now that I’ve started a hint on ’22. But you should assume it’s out there and plans are underway for that product, as well as some other products."

2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition was the latest game in the franchise and was met rave reviews. BioWare was reportedly working on a Dragon Age title since 2015, but that was cancelled. This new Dragon Age game that EA referred to is apparently influenced by that.

New Star Wars game

More from App and Gaming News

Yes, EA has plans for another new Star Wars game. It’s far too early to talk about it, but EA mentioned Star Wars “stuff” might drop into FY 2022 or possibly earlier. This would indicate that a new game set in the galaxy far, far away is coming before April 2022, but there was no clue as to what it could be.

While I’m hoping for some sort of RPG, I think a new Battlefront installment seems likely. EA Vancouver’s open-world game and Visceral’s game — led by Amy Hennig — were both cancelled.
