Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is getting a larger map with Set 2, and Riot Games’ lead designer Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer has shared the first look at it.

While Riot Games is keeping a pretty tight lid on most of the specifics regarding Teamfight Tactics (TFT) Set 2 until next week’s more in-depth blog post, a few details have trickled out courtesy of lead designer Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer.

Chief among them is that TFT will be getting a larger map in the upcoming season. Mortimer confirmed the speculation on Twitter, even sharing a first look at the new map.

As you can see, the map is expanding to 8×7. TFT‘s current map size is 6×7, with each player given three rows. In the new map, each player will now have four rows to work with, which Mortimer says “should open up a ton of new positioning options.”

The larger map brings TFT more in line with other auto brawlers, but the increase in size has also sparked some concern that certain champions and traits will be indirectly nerfed as a result. Others, like Draven with RFC or Assassins, will be ridiculously overpowered.

Mortimer addressed this with a cryptic tweet, suggesting so much is changing in Set 2 that a lot of these concerns will be a non-issue.

With Set 2 introducing all-new champions, origins, classes and items, it’s impossible to predict how this bigger map will impact anything in TFT. The current state of the game will undoubtedly look much different when Rise of the Elements arrives in November. Given how little we know about what’s to come with Set 2, it seems a bit too premature to start worrying.

Overall, an increase in the size of the map is a good thing for TFT moving forward as it will allow for more strategic champion placement.

TFT Set 2 “Rise of the Elements” will arrive on the PBE on October 22 before hitting the live servers on November 6.
