We're just a couple of days away until the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The highly anticipated sequel to 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake is set to launch for PS5 on February 29.

But for those who have yet to upgrade to the current gen PlayStation, you may be wondering if there's any chance to play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS4. After all, its predecessor was playable on PlayStation 4.

Can you play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS4?

At this time, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will only be playable on PlayStation 5. While a previous trailer alluded this was a timed deal — stating it is "not available on other formats until at least 05.29.24 — this was likely referring to PC (and possibly Xbox).

If there were plans for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS4, it would be playable on launch. We rarely, if ever, see a developer work to port a game to a previous console generation, and I just don't see that being the case here.

In fact, I don't even think the PS4 could run Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Graphically, it's one of the prettiest games I've seen from this generation.

Even on PS5, you must choose between Fidelity or Performance mode. So I can't imagine the PS4 could run it smoothly on either setting.

In all likelihood, Square's "other formats" statement had more to do with a PC version of the game. While nothing official has been announced, the game will almost certainly make its way to PC at some point in the future. It's a bit cloudier for Xbox, and even more questionable for the Nintendo Switch 2 (Nintendo's heavily rumored next console).

So for now, if you plan on playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at launch, it's going to have to be on PlayStation 5.
