Hogwarts Legacy was one of the hottest releases of 2023. The Harry Potter spin-off did nearly everything right and gave gamers the ultimate Hogwarts experience. With how much success Hogwarts Legacy has had, what does this mean for a potential Hogwarts Legacy sequel?

Is Hogwarts Legacy 2 on the horizon?

Recently, JB Perrette (CEO of global streaming and games at Warner Brothers Discovery) spoke at a Morgan Stanley conference and gave an update on where the future of their company is headed. During the conference, Perrette made note of how successful Hogwarts Legacy turned out to be and because of its success, it did wonders for the company. On the other hand, he made note that Suicide Squad has not gone to plan how Warner Brothers had expected and because of that things can get very "volatile."

JB Perrette continued to discuss what the potential plans for Warner Brothers Discovery had for future projects. To summarize what was said during the conference, Warner Brothers Discovery plans on focusing less on Triple A "one and done" type games and focus more on free-to-play and live service experiences.

What this means is that a Hogwarts Legacy 2 is basically out of the question and even another game in the Hogwarts Legacy universe seems to be out of the question as well.

Warner Brothers Discovery has the rights to create games from Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and DC. They have great franchises and great possibilities of franchises to build games on, but they just won't likely be a Triple A experience. However, it sounds like the goal is to create live service games around these beloved franchises, but just not make them a one and done experience.

It is interesting that Warner Brothers Discovery wants to take this type of approach. Their goal is to make more people spend more time on platforms, and this will surely allow something like that to happen, but I don't think a lot of gamers are going to be happy about this news.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is Warner Brothers Discovery's latest Live Service game and the game completely bombed out. The reviews were underwhelming and thus completely missed the expectations that the company was trying to achieve.

When Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was announced as a Live Service experience, many gamers were upset. Most gamers do not enjoy live service video games because it becomes a money pit and a play to win type of experience. The fact that Warner Brothers Discovery wants to double down and focus on these types of games is very interesting and may not sit well with their community.

However, a live service game doesn't always mean it is going to flop. If it is created correctly, it has the chance to have major success and bring in tons of money. Look at how big Fortnite, Rocket League, and Apex Legends have grown over the years. All three of those games are examples of Live Service video games. They have all had major success and continue to bring in big money for their respective companies. That is the hope that Warner Brothers Discovery is hoping to hit on. They missed with Suicide Squad, but they believe in their technology and company that they can create the next big Live Service video game.

Since it sounds like Warner Brothers Discovery is strictly towards free-to-play and Live Service gaming experiences, I wouldn't hold your breath on a Hogwarts Legacy sequel. I am sure that there are plans for future Harry Potter video games, but most likely not a Triple A one and done.
