Like PlayStation and Xbox, October is a big month for the Nintendo Switch. The Switch isn’t typically considered a powerhouse gaming console, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some powerhouse games releasing for it.

Nintendo may have the strongest IP, and in October the company will be flexing it with the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This is a traditional side-scrolling platformer — the first since 2012’s New Super Mario Bros. U — in which you play as one of eight iconic characters (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Nabbit and Yoshi) and try to save the Flower Kingdom. Super Mario Bros. Wonder introduces a few new wrinkles to the franchise, including Wonder Flowers that transform your world and power-ups, like Elephant Fruit and Bubble Flower.

If you’re looking for more side-scrolling platforming fun, Sonic Superstars is a throwback to the classic Sonic games released for the SEGA Genesis in the 90s. It’s actually played in 2.5D perspective, meaning a 3D game world with player movement on a 2D plane. Play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles or Amy — each with their own unique abilities — as you traverse the North Star Islands to defeat Doctor Eggman, Fang the Hunter and Trip the Sungazer.

Also coming in October is a sequel to a beloved Nintendo 3DS title. Detective Pikachu Returns is set to arrive on October 6, and reunite players with the tough-talking Pikachu and his partner Tim Goodman as they unravel the mysteries of Ryme City. Detective Pikachu Returns isn’t your typical Pokemon game, but that’s perhaps what makes it so fascinating.

For those looking for a bit more action, the Batman: Arkham Trilogy launches for Switch on October 13. This features all three Batman: Arkham games — Batman: Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight — plus their LDC all in one easy to consume package.

Below are some of the new games coming to Nintendo Switch in October 2023. Some of the more notable games are highlighted in bold.
