Why you should buy Horizon Forbidden West for PS4 and not PS5
By Andrew Lin
If you’re among the lucky few to possess the elusive PS5 and want to get Horizon Forbidden West, don’t buy the PS5 version. Get the PS4 version instead. Here’s what you need to know.
Warning: Don’t buy Horizon Forbidden West for PS5
PS5s are hard to get. That’s why upgrade paths are so important for the consumer, as you can buy the games you want to play now and then have the enhanced version when new consoles are easily available.
After backlash, Sony changed their policy so that Horizon Forbidden West will have that key PS5 upgrade for PS4 players. This decision seems to have been made in haste, as Horizon Forbidden West sits in an awkward position where you could easily overpay for it.
It’s not just physical copies, either. Unusually, digital copies of the PS4 version give you an automatic upgrade to the PS5 version. This is an incredible feel-bad scenario for those who pre-ordered the digital PS5 version. You couldn’t pre-install it, but that time has already passed.
There is absolutely no reason to buy the PS5 version of the game in any capacity. Just get the PS4 version either physically or digitally and cash in that sweet free upgrade.
If you wait a little bit, you could probably get the PS4 version cheaper on sale as stores begin to phase out last generation products.
PS5 games also go on sale frequently, as stores are overstocked with games that people can’t use at this time. I have a feeling this may happen to physical copies of Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 as thrifty gamers snap up the PS4 discs instead.
Horizon Forbidden West will be the last first-party Sony title to have free cross-gen entitlement. From now one, it’ll cost 10 bucks to upgrade to make up that pricing delta, starting with Gran Turismo 7.
