Call of Duty video games, for as popular as they are, are also some of the most heavily criticized year after year. The biggest thing that the developers have tried to improve on over the years are making it more realistic. Call of Duty: Vanguard will attempt to inject some realism into its gameplay by featuring environmental destruction on its multiplayer maps.

Each multiplayer map in Call of Duty: Vanguard will have parts that can be destroyed. Not every aspect of a map will be destructible, certain parts that open up new lanes to attack from, new sightlines, etc. Not only does this add some realism, but also new strategic elements. And while this is new to Call of Duty, the Battlefield games have feature destructible environments for quite a while now. So it’s nice to see Call of Duty catch up.

Additionally, this new feature should help make camping a little harder. Obviously, there will still be places that players can hide behind that will be indestructible, but it will still limit the number of people staying in one particular spot. You might think you are safe after running around a wall, but if that wall is can be destroyed, then it opens up an entirely new strategy.

Greg Reisdorf, creative director for Sledgehammer Games multiplayer, said that players will have the option to mount their weapons on indestructible objects. Matt Abbott, the associate art director, also touched on the interesting fact that depending on how powerful the weapon being used, it will depend on how much damage it will do to the environment.

It will be interesting to see how Call of Duty fans react to this new feature when they get the chance to play it upon release. I personally think that features like this are a way to keep long-running franchises feeling new every year. This feature will add a completely new aspect to Call of Duty and it will be interesting to see how players react to the destroyable maps over a long period of time.
