Nintendo Switch Online is the home for classic NES and Super NES games. And soon, it could also feature Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles as well.

There have been numerous rumors and reports that Nintendo will tap into its classic handheld game catalogue for Nintendo Switch Online and most recently, Eurogamer has separately corroborated these reports while adding “other retro platforms” are also a possibility.

Nintendo Switch Online, which launched in September 2018 currently boasts around 80 NES and 50 SNES games in its library.  Now three years later, many of these platform’s best games are already offered via the service (but seriously, where’s Earthbound?). Adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles could maintain the flow of “new” classic game arrivals.

Both Game Boy and Game Boy Color had a number of titles that fans would undoubtedly like to play again on the Nintendo Switch. Some of my personal favorites include Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (Game Boy), Pokemon Crystal (Game Boy Color), and Mega Man V (Game Boy). And that’s only just scratching the surface of the Game Boy handheld library.

Adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles to Nintendo Switch Online would obviously be a huge boost to the service. I don’t know how many new subscribers it would draw in, but it would almost certainly keep those already invested in the service subscribed.

Reports of the possibility of Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles coming to Nintendo Switch stem all the way back to January 2019 when a datamine revealed emulators hidden within the code.
