Call of Duty: Vanguard was revealed this week with Activision confirming a November 5 release for this year’s blockbuster shooter. Naturally, the reveal was accompanied with pre-order availability.

Call of Duty: Vanguard will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One and PC this year. The next-gen version will cost $69.99 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, $10 more than the last-gen edition on PS4 and Xbox One ($59.99). But since we’ve got two console generations supported at the same time, and not everyone has been able to purchase a next-gen console yet, deciding which one you actually need to purchase can get a little bit tricky.

Call of Duty: Vanguard Digital Editions

Currently, there are three editions of Call of Duty: Vanguard that you can purchase.

The Standard Edition is basically considered the “last-gen” version, and is available for $59.99 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. When purchasing this game digitally, you are able to play it on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S via backward compatibility; however, you won’t be getting the next-gen experience with higher framerate, improved graphics, shorter load times and other advantages.

If you want the “next-gen” Call of Duty: Vanguard experience, you’ll have to buy the Cross-Gen or Ultimate Edition. The Cross-Gen is available for $69.99, which is the going price for next-gen games these days.

Here’s where things get interesting. Let’s say you want to upgrade to a next-gen console but supply issues have prevented you from being able to buy one. You can purchase the Digital Standard Edition of Call of Duty: Vanguard for your older console and then later upgrade to the Cross Gen Bundle at a later time, whenever you buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

On PC, there are only two versions, the Standard Edition and the Ultimate Edition. There’s no need to purchase the Cross Gen Bundle on PC unless you also plan on playing Vanguard on console as well as PC.

Call of Duty: Vanguard Physical Editions Upgrades

If you are buying a physical version of Call of Duty: Vanguard, it’s mostly the same. Buying the Standard Edition for PS4 or Xbox One comes with the last-gen version of the game with the ability to play on next-gen via backward compatibility.

Activision will offer an option to upgrade from PS4 physical to PS5 through  he PlayStation Store; however, you must have the disc inserted into the PlayStation 5 to access the digitally upgraded PS5 version of the game. So make make sure you don’t own a Digital PS5 as there would obviously be no place to insert the disc. The Xbox One version can not be upgrade to the Xbox Series X|S.
