NHL 22: Biggest takeaways from the reveal trailer
The NHL 22 reveal trailer dropped yesterday, giving us our first look at EA’s hockey game on next-gen consoles. Can it be October already so I can get my hands on the game?
The trailer showed new additions to the game that have never been showcased in any other NHL video game before. Here’s the full trailer in case you missed it and below is a quick recap of some of the exciting new features.
The first new thing NHL 22 will feature is shown in the first three seconds of the trailer. NHL 22 will finally take a visual leap by switching to the Frostbite Engine. Madden and FIFA already made the move years ago and the visuals from the looks of the trailer are absolutely stunning.
The whole point of using the Frostbite Engine is to make the game feel as realistic as possible and to make each athlete look real as well. The Frostbite Engine is a major addition to NHL 22 and based off the looks of the NHL 22 trailer, the game is the best looking by far.
Another takeaway from the trailer, that we already knew would be coming, is the Climate Pledge Arena. If that arena doesn’t sound too familiar that’s because the Seattle Kraken are set to begin their NHL career there and there hasn’t been an official NHL game played there yet. We already assumed that the Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena would make their debut in NHL 22, but the trailer 100% confirmed that.

Another key element being added to NHL 22 is the Superstar X-Factors, similar to what we see in Madden. These Superstar X-Factors bring unique moves to some of the higher profile athletes. For example, in the trailer Andrei Vasilevskiy makes an incredible spinning leg save with his legs. Andrei Vasilevskiy’s Superstar X-Factor ability is called Contortionist and is why he was able to make such an amazing save.
The other Superstar X-Factor ability that we saw was with Toronto Maple Leaf cover athlete Austin Matthews. Matthews X-Factor ability was called Shock and Awe and it allows Matthews to score goals in unbelievable fashion based on how he would in the real world.
Those were the only two Superstar X-Factor abilities showcased and it would be interesting to see how many other players have this unique feature. Superstar X-Factors will be featured in Franchise Mode, as well as the Be A Pro, Hockey Ultimate Team and World of Chel modes.
