Call of Duty League 2021 Championship Weekend is approaching and ahead of the big event, which takes place from August 19-22, Activision has updated its health and safety protocol. Due to the rising rate of COVID-19 cases across the country, and especially in Los Angeles County where the event is held, all Champs attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination or proof of a negative PCR or antigen test that’s within 72 hours of attendance.

Attendees must be fully vaccinated which, according to Activision, means having received full doses of approved vaccines at least 14 days prior to the event. Proof of vaccination can be the actual vaccination card itself, containing your name and the last dose administered, a photo of the vaccination card as a separate document or stored on your phone, or documentation from a healthcare provider.

If you aren’t fully vaccinated, proof of a negative PCR or antigen test received within 72 hours of the day of your attendance — either printed, an email or text message from the test provider or — will be accepted.

Regardless of your vaccination status, all attendees will still be required to wear a mask at all times during the event. This is in accordance with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health order.

The updated safety protocols come as the United States is facing an increased surge in COVID-19 infections due to the highly contagious Delta variant. While the vaccines greatly reduce the damage from the infection and minimize the chance of hospitalization or complications from it, it’s still possible for vaccinated people to become infected and even spread it. Hence, the reason for wearing a mask during the event as well.

Despite the precautions, Activision still warns of the inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 while attending the event. While some may disagree with the updated safety protocols, the precautions are simply meant to mitigate the risk and protect fans, players, staff and others. It’s better than the alternative which would be to simply cancel the live event and host it digitally. At least this way, fans can still attend and experience the excitement of the Championship while taking reasonable precautions.

As cities continue to try and slow the spread of Delta, more and more are beginning to institute vaccine requirements to participate in indoor public activities. New York City and San Francisco have already drafted measures for vaccine requirements, while L.A. is moving towards the vaccine requirement for indoor restaurants, stores, gyms and bars. Naturally, a major event like Call of Duty League would also apply.
