Horizon Forbidden West: PS5’s holiday blockbuster could be delayed to 2022
A new report from Bloomberg claims that Horizon Forbidden West has been delayed to 2022. The highly anticipated sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn has a proposed release window of holiday 2021, but the actual date was never actually locked in.
According to Bloomberg, the delay would push back Horizon Zero Dawn‘s release to early 2022. It’s not a terribly long delay, but it does pose a problem for Sony which now lacks a high-profile, PlayStation exclusive blockbuster for the holiday season.
Horizon Forbidden West is the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed PS4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn, which sold more than 10 million copies following its 2017 release. Horizon Forbidden West is due to release on both PS4 and PS5.

If the report is true, this would obviously be a big blow to the PlayStation’s holiday lineup. Looking at the current release calendar, there’s not a whole lot in terms of exclusives. We’ve got Bethesda’s Deathloop and Kojima’s Death Stranding Director’s Cut in September, both of which are exclusive to PlayStation. But beyond those two games, it’s mostly third-party games that will carry the PS5 into the holiday season and a lot of them will be available on other platforms.
It’s possible Sony could have some surprises up its sleeve for the remainder of 2021, but the company didn’t host any sort of E3 games showcase this summer, so we really don’t know what’s planned. Sony has been fairly busy in the first half of the year, releasing Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Part, two very well received games. But the lack of any sort of PlayStation exclusive release during the holiday months is worrisome.
Sony last reported it had sold over 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles since the system launched. And they probably would’ve sold more if not for the chip shortages plaguing the world. A delay of Horizon Forbidden West to early 2022 isn’t the end of the world, and probably won’t hinder PS5 sales this holiday season, but it could ultimately affect the company’s bottom line for the quarter. So guess it sucks if you’re an investor.
