Tokyo Olympics: Every video game song played during the Opening Ceremony
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics kicked off on Friday — after a year delay due to COVID — with the Opening Ceremony. And if you tuned into the Parade of Nations, you probably heard some familiar songs accompanying this year’s Olympians; it a medley of music from iconic Japanese video games.
The Parade of Nations began with Greece walking in to Dragon Quest’s “Overture: Roto’s Theme” which immediately went into Final Fantasy’s “Victory Fanfare.”
It didn’t stop there though. Music from Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger, Sonic the Hedgehog and more echoed through stadium as participating nations celebrated their achievements.
My personal favorite was the “Olympus Coliseum” from Kingdom Hearts. Talk about the perfect song choice, right? Is there anything more Olympic-sounding than that?

Seriously, how perfect for an Olympics hosted in Japan? In the United States, unless you’re actually into video games, the music doesn’t garner much attention. But in Japan, video game music is considered an art form, and the country is home to many iconic and famous composers.
I’m not usually one to pay too much attention to the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games, but this was definitely a unique way to go about the music — and, oh, so perfect.
Interestingly, the iconic themes from some of Nintendo’s biggest franchises, such as Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, weren’t played during the parade. Neither were the jingles from some early classics such as Pac-Man. But I think we can all agree that the music that was chosen was a perfect selection. Olympians are often viewed as heroes and there is nothing more heroic-sounding than video game music.
