Genshin Impact on Epic Games Store: Everything you need to know
By Andrew Lin
MiHoYo announced today that Genshin Impact will be available on the Epic Games store when 1.6 launches next week. Here’s everything you need to know about Genshin Impact Epic Games Store partnership.
Going through the reactions (and sieving through people begging for Primogems), the Epic Games partnership is confusing a lot of players.
Genshin Impact will not be moving to the Epic Games store, rather, it’ll also be available on that platform. You won’t need to use the Epic Games launcher, and you shouldn’t notice anything different. No one will be forced to change their current arrangement.

You can, of course, continue to use miHoYo’s own launcher and download the game from their website as usual. It’s not clear if you could start playing on Epic Games and cross-progress on miHoYo’s launcher.
I wasn’t entirely sure what advantage having the free-to-play game appear on an external storefront is, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s for easier accessibility and exposure.

While one can seek out Genshin Impact from miHoYo’s website if they saw the ads for it or heard about it from a friend, showing up on another storefront like the Epic Games store is just advertising.
Many find this hard to believe, but the majority of most players for most games are super casual. That’s not a bad thing (gatekeepers go home), and the kinds of players who wouldn’t stumble on the game otherwise may see the listing while browsing the Epic Games store and be compelled to play. The players miHoYo and Epic Games are trying to target with this partnership probably aren’t reading this article right now, nor would they actively be seeking out content about the media they consume.
Look at the PS4/PS5, for example. Genshin Impact is heavily advertised on Sony’s storefront. Having it on a general storefront like that grabs players who otherwise wouldn’t have heard of it into the game. It’s a huge demographic, and the Epic Games store is known for their free giveaways and Fortnite, one of the biggest games in the world. There are tons of players on the Epic Games Store, and everyone of those players will see Genshin Impact.
