Mass Effect Legendary Edition is officially out which means fans can finally re-experience BioWare’s beloved sci-fi trilogy in all of its remastered glory. Mass Effect Legendary Edition features all three games in the Commander Shepard saga (the first three games in the series) and while the series is known more for its sci-fi action roots, romance has always been a cornerstone in the games.

One of the cool things about the series is that the choices you make carry over into the sequels. Although the number of romance options is limited in the original Mass Effect, BioWare did expand upon the options over the course of the series.

For now though, while playing the first game in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, your romance options are limited to just three choices:

  • Ashley Williams (male Shepard)
  • Kaidan Alenko (female Shepard)
  • Liara T’Soni (male and female Shepard)

How to Romance Ashley Williams or Kaidan Alenko in Mass Effect

Because of the limited options in Mass Effect 1, romancing these characters is pretty easy and straightforward. Basically, you’ll want to respond with the nicest and most positive options (basically Paragon) when given the chance to talk with them.

The courting of Ashley or Kaidan begins after the events of Eden Prime. Once Shepard awakens, either Ashley (male Shepard) or Kaidan (female Shepard) will be by the bedside. Simply respond nicely to their conversation by picking the Paragon options.

As you complete various missions, you’ll begin to have extended conversations with either Ashley or Kaidan. At the end of Virmire, you’ll be forced to make a decision to save Ashley or Kaidan. Obviously, you’ll want to rescue the character you are hoping to romance. For male Shepard, it means selecting “Rescue Ashley,” which will result in Kaidan’s death. For female Shepard, you’ll want to rescue Kaidan, and Ashley will be killed.

When you complete all four Mission Worlds, you’ll return to the Citadel and either Ashley or Kaidan will come to comfort you. Continue to select the Paragon options and you’ll lock in your Romance.

When you head to Illos, either Ashley or Kaidan will visit you in your personal quarters. Again, Paragon responses will ultimately lead to the Romance Scene.

How to Romance Liara T’Soni in Mass Effect

Liara T’Soni is the only character in Mass Effect that can be romanced by either male or female Shepard. If you are hoping to romance Liara, then you’ll want to rescue her as soon as possible by completing “Therum: Find Liara T’Soni.” Liara will naturally be drawn to Shepard. Driven by her curiosity, she will make some unintended advances, which could impact your relationship status with either Ashley or Kaidan.]

Throughout the course of the game, you can romance Liara alongside your human counterpart. However, there will come some points in the game where you are confronted by both Romance options and will be asked to choose. You’ll want to choose Liara if that’s who you want. Although you can respond with “Can’t I have you both?”, it will result in them storming off and locking out the romance option with your human squadmates. You’ll still be able to talk to Liara and rekindle the Romance.

If you want to continue your romance with Liara, simply select “Don’t be.” This will cease your romance with Ashley.

If you’re solely courting Liara, then you’ll eventually reach a moment after three Mission Worlds where you and Liara talk about the Asari mating union. You’ll want to respond with “There’s no rush.”

After you complete all four Mission Worlds and return to the Citadel, you’ll be able to lock in your Romance with Liara by responding with Paragon answers. While en route to Illos, she’ll visit your personal quarters. Respond with Paragon and you’ll officially Romance her.
