On May 21, Rust, the multiplayer competitive online survival game, will be making its console debut. Rust Console Edition is officially coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. But what about next-gen consoles?

Although the game has technically been developed and optimized for last-gen systems, you’ll actually be able to play it on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 as well thanks to backward compatibility. Rust Console Edition is based on the PC version but has been “designed and optimized for a completely separate and unique console player experience.”

Developer Double Eleven went into a lengthy blog post detailing everything they had to do to optimize Rust for consoles but the main takeaway is that it will follow its own update roadmap separate from the PC version. The game will be updated over time but an exact roadmap has not been shared yet.
