Clash Royale: Magic Items will help solve the card grinding problem
Clash Royale turned five years old this month, and while it’s a feat that should be celebrated, it’s age poses certain challenges for the developers at Supercell. Clash Royale is an online real-time strategy game that combines elements from tower defense, multiplayer online battle arena and collectible card games.
Cards are earned and upgraded by simply playing the game. But there are a lot of them at this point and it can be daunting not only to unlock each card but to level each of them up as well.
At first, unlocking and leveling up cards goes quickly. But, as is the case with every free-to-play game, this process typically slows. It doesn’t necessarily grind to a halt in Clash Royale, but with all of the cards in the collection, it could take a long time to find the exact ones you’re looking to level for the meta comps.
I’ve played Clash Royale off and on since launch and I’m not even close to having every card max level. The decks I use regularly are almost maxed level but it took a lot of patience and frustration to get to this point. Newcomers may not have that same patience.
It’s worth noting, that you can’t flat out buy specific cards to upgrade, but you can purchase items that’ll increase the speed at which you can upgrade them. The point is, veteran players and those who spend money will typically be at a level advantage with cards. While it’s possible to climb the trophy ranks early on, you’ll inevitably run into someone who has more powerful cards, and it can be frustrating if your skill is offset by a simple difference in card level. Tournaments help balance this out by capping the cards at a specific level, so that helps.
In any case, Supercell is helping lessen the grind in Clash Royale by introducing Magic Items in the next update. Simply put, Magic Cards are used to help you upgrade your cards faster. There are five types of Magic Items: Wild Cards, Book of Cards, Book of Books, Chest Keys and Magic Coins.
Wild Cards allow you to choose exactly what card you want to level up. Wild Cards come in every rarity, with the rarest being the Legendary Wild Card. You can use a Wild Card to help upgrade any card in your collection that is of the same rarity. For example, a Common Wild card can be used on Archers, Spear Goblins, the Knight, Minions, etc. A Rare Wild Card can be used on the Mini P.E.K.K.A., Musketeer, Giant, Hog Rider, Valkyrie, you get the point. This is a wonderful addition as you can focus on upgrading a specific card more quickly.
The Book of Cards is essentially just a collection of Wild Cards. It also comes in all rarities and adds 20 cards to a specific unit of that rarity.
The Book of Books is “the best book of all time.” It levels up the progress of any card of any rarity.

Chest Keys can open any Chest that is in your Chest Slot, removing any sort of wait time. You’ll probably want to save these for Legendary Chests or chests that require a longer opening time.
Lastly, there is the Magic Coin. In addition to having to grind for the individual cards, upgrading requires a certain amount of gold. Naturally, the required gold increases the higher the card level. For me, this is one of the mechanics that slows down my progress as it can require quite a bit of gold to upgrade in the later levels. The Magic Coin removes any upgrade cost. So instead of paying 100,000 Gold for a Level 13 upgrade, you can use the Magic Coin and not pay anything. Again, you’ll probably want to save this for the more expensive levels.
Magic Items are unlocked in Pass Royale, the Trophy Road, Special Challenges and Global Tournaments and the Shop. So there seems to be ample opportunity to earn these items and streamline your progression.
