Microsoft has once again sent shockwaves through the gaming world this week by announcing the massive deal they reached with Bethesda Games. Bethesda is responsible for creating some of your favorite game franchises of recent memory, including Fallout, The Evil Within, Dishonored, and The Elder Scrolls. Needless to say, purchasing such a company would have to cost an arm and a leg.

This past week it was announced that Microsoft did indeed buy Bethesda for a whopping $7.5 billion. That is a massive deal, but something that is going to benefit Microsoft in such a major way down the road. The $7.5 billion purchase is the priciest acquisition that Microsoft has ever made, but I am sure that all $7.5 billion down to the penny will be worth it.

It is pretty clear that Phil Spencer and Microsoft’s main priority is to put a lot of their focus on the Xbox Game Pass. It seems, as of this moment, the Xbox Game Pass is the future of Xbox. With the number of streaming services there are out there in the world, Microsoft is hoping to establish its own as the go-to for video games.

Phil Spencer made a comment on the acquisition stating “We will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC.” The franchises that Bethesda has to offer will surely attract the attention of many gamers who want to get their hands on these iconic franchises for one low price.

Microsoft currently has more than 15 million subscribers to the Xbox Game Pass. If you take the average cost of the Xbox Game Pass, depending on which subscription you have, which would most likely be around $10 and multiply that by each subscriber, you get $150 million per month. If you then multiply that by 12 for the whole year, you arrive at a total of $1.8 billion a year just on the Xbox Game Pass. Of course, you have to take into account some free months of the Game Pass and some discounted Game Pass months, but generally, they are guaranteed over $1 billion on the Xbox Game Pass alone.

With the acquisition of Bethesda Softworks to the mix, who knows how many more subscribers that will add to their already impressive 15 million. The $7.5 billion was a hefty investment, but an investment that they will surely make up down the long haul. I cannot wait to play some of these amazing franchises when they finally hit the Xbox Game Pass in the near future.
