Sony’s State of Play for PlayStation wasn’t quite as exciting as I hoped it’d be but we did get one very exciting announced. Final Fantasy VII Remake will be coming to the PlayStation 5 this summer.

The PS5 version is referred to as Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and in addition to next-gen visual and gameplay enhancements, it will come with a new episode featuring Yuffie.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will feature improved textures, lighting and background environments on PlayStation 5 with two game modes that you can switch between; “Graphics Mode” which prioritizes 4K high-res graphics and “Performance Mode” which prioritizes 60 frames per second for smooth action. Regardless of which mode you play in, PS5 owners will still benefit from optimized load times (but nothing will speed up that staircase sequence) as well as haptic feedback integration and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller. There’s also a fully-featured and customizable Photo Mode.

In addition to all of the gameplay and graphical improvements, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will also include a brand-new episode starring Yuffie front-and-center.

"In this new adventure, play as ninja Yuffie Kisaragi as she infiltrates the shadowy Shinra Corporation to steal a powerful materia and restore glory to her homeland."

According to Square Enix, the new Yuffie episode is “optimised for PlayStation 5” so you will not be able to play it on the PS4 version of the game.

Those of you who have already purchased the PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake will be eligible to upgrade to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for free when it arrives on PlayStation 5 on June 10, 2021. The upgrade path also requires those who own the disc version of Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4 to have a PS5 console with a disc drive in order to download the digital upgrade.

It should be noted that those who get FFVII Remake for free through PlayStation Plus in March will not be eligible for the PS5 digital version upgrade. Additionally, those who do take advantage of the free upgrade to Final Fantasy Remake VII Intergrade will still need to purchase the Yuffie episode separately as it’s not included for free.

I’m one of the rare breeds who never actually played the original Final Fantasy VII so I’m not at all familiar with who Yuffie actually is. Apparently, you meet her after you leave Midgard, which is where the Remake stopped. She’s also an optional character in the original game, but as we all know, the remake is changing things up a bit. This episode will presumably serve as a nice introduction to Yuffie, perhaps setting the stage for a larger role in the new story.
