During the Nintendo Direct today, we were shown a brief glimpse of an intriguing new game, Star Wars: Hunters.

The very brief trailer took us through what looked like the underground entrance of a combat arena while various competitors appeared via hologram. There were Jedi, bounty hunters, Imperial troopers and more.

Following the trailer, it was revealed that Star Wars: Hunters is a competitive arena combat game coming to Nintendo Switch (and mobile devices) in 2021. The game is set in between Episodes VI and VII, so after the fall of the Galactic Empire but before the rise of the First Order.

Shortly after the Nintendo Direct, Zynga and Lucasfilm Games shared a press release that revealed a few more specific details. Specifically, the press release mentions “thrilling, squad-based multiplayer battles featuring a diverse array of distinctive new Star Wars characters.”

My initial thought was that Star Wars: Hunters would be a first- or third-person action combat game fought in an arena, similar to EA’s Rocket Arena. However, the mention of “squad based” battles leads me to believe gameplay will be more of a real-time strategic combat game.

It sounds like you’ll collect various heroes and create a squad from them. Then you’ll bring that squad into different arena settings — “inspired by iconic Star Wars locales” — and compete against other teams.

With little else shown or explained, all we can do is hypothesize as to what gameplay will consist of. I’m going to guess it will be a real-time action game in which the characters take turns auto-attacking and you’ll be able to launch special attacks when some sort of meter is charged. This seems to make the most sense given the description and platforms Star Wars; Hunters will be available for.

We also know that it will be free to download, so I’m assuming there will be some sort of energy system or character leveling mechanic that encourages you to spend money. Typically these squad-based hero collectors allow you to level up each character individually which makes them stronger and unlocks special abilities. Or there are some special events that require tickets to participate and you can only get them if you spend money.

Obviously, there are still lots of questions surrounding Star Wars: Hunters. Will the roster be comprised of entirely new characters or will we be seeing some familiar faces as well? Hopefully, we don’t have to wait long for details.
