The Phantom Thieves are set to return with the release of Persona 5 Strikers in February. The game will be released for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, but there’s been no mention of a PS5 version. Will fans who own Sony’s new PlayStation 5 at least be able to play the game through the console’s backward compatibility functionality?
According to an Atlus press event (and confirmed by IGN), the answer is yes; Persona 5 Strikers will be playable on the PS5. However, the game will not receive any sort of next-gen improvements or upgrades when played on the PlayStation 5. It’s possible that some of the load times could be naturally shortened thanks to the system’s ultra-fast SSD, though. Just don’t expect anything major.
Persona 5 Strikers continues the story of Joker and the Phantom Thieves of Hearts six months after the events of Persona 5. The group’s summer of rest and relaxation is cut short when they’re enlisted to investigate a series of mysterious cases occurring across Japan. In typical Persona fashion, there’s another realm where innocents are jailed and forced to forfeit their hearts’ desire. It’s up to the Phantom Thieves to liberate those who are imprisoned and strike back against corruption.

But how you do so will be drastically different than previous games. Persona 5 Strikers trades in the classic turn-based combat in favor of the more hybrid combat system that combines the action-oriented real-time combat inspired by Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors franchise with the intricate RPG pause-and-plan sequences of Persona.
All of the Phantom Thieves are playable with each featuring unique skills, spells and magic. You’re also able to strengthen their skills and abilities as you progress through the game.
