Back in 1995, developer Reflections Interactive and publisher Psygnosis released a game called Destruction Derby on the PlayStation. It was based on the sport of demolition derby; players has to race and destroy other cars to score points. It wasn’t a particularly great game looking back on it, but as a kid, I absolutely loved the vehicular carnage.

Then there was another game you may have heard of, Twisted Metal. Another vehicular combat game, Twisted Metal was a ridiculously awesome competition in which you had to destroy the other vehicles with things like missiles, bombs and special vehicular powers.

My love for these games is one of the reasons I’m so excited for Destruction AllStars, one of the free games coming to PlayStation 5 as part of February’s PS Plus offerings. Destruction AllStars is like a blend of Destruction Derby and Twisted Metal. At its core,  it’s a vehicular combat game but the concept and mechanics are little more fleshed out than the aforementioned games. There are vehicle types, heroes with specific vehicles and abilities, and various game modes.

The recent Sony State of Play gave us a much more in-depth look at Destruction AllStars and the carnage it will bring to PS5.

"Pick one of 16 superstar competitors, then leap into four game modes, using timing, tactics and skills to cause carnage behind the wheel or create havoc with your parkour skills. Perfect your character’s abilities – including a hero vehicle unique to them –  to give you the edge in free-for-all battles or team challenges and become Global Destruction Federation Champion."

Destruction AllStars feels like a game that will greatly benefit from releasing through PS Plus. By releasing for free to the millions of PS Plus members, it’s guaranteed to have a community at launch, and this is one of those games that needs a community to thrive.

It reminds me a lot of Rocket League, another car-based competitive arena game that initially released through PS Plus. The game was fun, but it no doubt benefitted from the massive community that jumped in early because it was free. I can see Destruction AllStars finding similar success.
