Lucasfilm Games, Ubisoft creating open-world Star Wars game
Lucasfilm Games has just announced a partnership with Ubisoft to create a brand new open-world Star Wars video game in the near future.
There have been tons of Star Wars video game news announced over the past week and that doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon. Lucasfilm Games made shockwaves through the gaming world today by announcing that they are partnering with Ubisoft to create a brand new open-world Star Wars video game. This news comes after the reveal of a new Indiana Jones video game currently being developed under Lucasfilm games and Bethesda, which was just announced the other day.
Vice President of Lucasfilm Games Douglas Reilly stated: “We’ve been working quietly behind the scenes for a while now, waiting for this moment.”
With that statement, Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment will be helping bring this game together. For those of you familiar with Massive Entertainment, are the developers of The Division, an open-world shooter-looter, so they have experience in this genre.
I am glad to hear that Ubisoft is a partner for this brand new game because they have done nothing but amazing work lately. The initial vibe I got from this news was a Star Wars meets Assassin’s Creed type video game. However, with confirmation that it’s Ubisoft Massive, we should probably expect something more in line with The Division.
The announcement mentions the game will be story-driven, which The Division was as well; but, that game was also open enough to support online multiplayer. Will this new Star Wars game follow the same path? Will there be different classes to choose from? Can you team up with friends to run missions? There are still so many questions but this is definitely some exciting news.
There has been speculation of what will happen to the future of EA and Star Wars and, at least now it appears that the exclusive rights to publish core Star Wars games on consoles and PC have opened up to others. That’s not to say we won’t get any more Star Wars games from EA, which has given us Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, the Star Wars Battlefront series, and even Star Wars: Squadrons.
Vice President of Lucasfilm Games, Douglas Reilly, also touched on this situation, stating: “We’re really proud of the games we have created with EA. We will continue working with them and our relationship has never been stronger. While we may not have a lot of details to share at the moment, we’ve got a number of projects underway with the talented teams at EA.”

After Reilly’s statement, speculation can officially be closed on whether or not they will continue to partner with EA. With the newly branded name Lucasfilm Games, that was an opportunity to expand their horizons and make it possible for other companies to help develop and publish games as well instead of limiting themselves to one sole publisher.
While this is just the tip of the iceberg in relation to any news regarding the new video game, there is still a ton of information for Lucasfilm Games and Ubisoft to release to the public regarding the open-world game. One major question that has been buzzing about early is that what era will this new Star Wars open-world video game be taking place in. That will most likely not be announced for quite some time and maybe not until we get an official trailer.
One thing I do know for sure is that this video game will most likely be canon to the Star Wars timeline. For people who follow along with the canon timeline for the Star Wars universe, this will be additional information that gets added to the canon timeline.
This is just the beginning for Lucasfilm Games. With two massive video games already being announced by them, it is not only clear that they have big plans for the future of Star Wars, but for the future of gaming as well.
