Steam’s Best Games of 2020 lists have quite a few surprises
Steam has revealed some of its best games of 2020 and there are quite a few surprises among the blockbusters.
I’ve already listed some of the surprising video game hits of 2020, including Among Us and Genshin Impact. Now Steam has come out with various “Best Games of 2020” lists and there are quite a few surprises here as well. There are multiple lists that cover everything from 2020’s Top Sellers to the year’s most-played games.
Perhaps the most surprising revelation is that the top seller of 2020, as measured by gross revenue, is Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. I was expected some AAA blockbuster but instead, we’ve got Mediatonic’s battle royale platformer.
As we’ve previously mentioned, Fall Guys released at the perfect time, giving bored gamers who were quarantined during the global pandemic an outlet to have some fun in a virtual playground. Inspired by popular game shows like Takeshi’s Castle and Total Wipeout, Fall Guys sees players race through obstacles courses to reach the crown.

Of course, there are some other well-known titles that were top-sellers on Steam in 2020, including Monster Hunter: World, DOOM Eternal, and Among Us. Cyberpunk 2077, despite its rough launch, also made the list as did the now seven-year-old Grand Theft Auto V.
As for the most played games, Life is Strange 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us and DOTA 2 top the list with over 200,000 peak players. Meanwhile, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Rocket League and Fall Guys all racked up over 100,000 peak players. The Witcher 3 is a five-year-old game but still very popular. It’s also possible that the premiere of the Netflix adaptation in December 2019 renewed some interest in the game.
There are some rather niche lists as well, including 2020’s top controller games, which was measured by daily active controller players. If you are interested in PC games but can’t shed the controller, you might take interest in some of these games: NBA 2K20, Persona 4 Golden, Dark Souls III, Fall Guys, The Witcher 3, and Monster Hunter: World.
