The PlayStation 5 released today and already there are reports of the PS5 bricking with a corrupted database or simply unable to turn on.

Today marks the official release of the PlayStation 5. While review consoles were sent out to media ahead of time, today is the first day where the mass population has their hands on Sony’s new console. And for the most part, it seems to be working but there are some users reporting issues with their PS5.

The issue seemingly getting the most attention is a post on Reddit in which the user claims his PS5 seemed to brick after just one hour of playing. Reddit user Vantana claims they were playing Astro’s Playroom when the DualSense controller disconnected and refused to sync with the console again. They write:

"Then I just pressed power again to turn it back on… at first it beeped once like it should… but then nothing else at all. No lights, no fan, nothing. It just beeped. I’ve unplugged it from the wall for a good half an hour and tried plugging it into a different wall socket, tried my old PS4 power cable, no good either. And it’s not even beeping now, it just seems completely dead."

Additional follow-ups revealed it was the PlayStation 5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive and noted that before it died, he got a “rebuilding database” screen on reboot.

The database seems to be an issue other users are having as well. On Twitter, there are numerous posts regarding database errors.  The console still seems to work, but the errors seem to appear repeatedly.

On Resetera, another user posted about a similar issue. User “Creepy Woody” claims they were playing Astro while installing some other games and the system turned off completely. He returned a little while later but was unable to turn the PlayStation 5 on.

Now it’s worth noting that as of this writing, this doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue. These seem to be isolated incidents which, unfortunately, happens with new technology. Even the Xbox Series X is having some issues, although reports of “smoking” were debunked as fake smoke caused by blowing vape into the console vent.

Naturally, any issues with a new console posted at launch is going to draw traction. While I don’t doubt the validity of these issues — as there is evidence of the system not working properly — I don’t think it’s a widespread problem, so nothing to be too concerned about right now.
