This year’s Nintendo Switch Black Friday bundle is a disappointment

The Nintendo Switch Black Friday bundle offers Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for this year in a row.

Nintendo has revealed this year’s Nintendo Switch Black Friday bundle and for the third year in a row, we’ll be seeing the hybrid console paired with a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Unlike previous years, however, you’ll be getting the newer Switch model with the better battery life.

The bundle will be priced at $299.99, which is what it has been in the past, and it will include a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe along with a three-month membership to Nintendo Switch Online.

Honestly, it’s not the most glitz Black Friday bundle. While Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has mass audience appeal, it’s hardly the best game the Nintendo Switch has to offer. But perhaps that’s why it’s being lumped in with the system. It’s popular enough that everyone can enjoy but probably not the game everyone wants a Switch to play (that would probably be The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, or any of the Super Mario games).

It’s disappointing to see the same game paired with the Switch year in and year out, but I’m also not really surprised. With the Nintendo Switch already hard to come by and easily at the top of many kids’ Christmas lists, Nintendo has very little incentive to offer some huge Black Friday discounts. Basically, the Nintendo Switch is going to sell regardless of whether or not there’s some sort of holiday promotion. This is just Nintendo throwing us a bone.

The biggest takeaway from this announcement is that you’ll hopefully be able to find Nintendo Switch consoles in stock this holiday season. The hybrid console has been in high demand these past few months with supply unable to keep up.

The Nintendo Switch Black Friday Bundle will be available starting November 22 at most major retailers, although you’ll probably want to stick to online shopping with the coronavirus pandemic. Most retailers are opting for online order and in-store or curbside pickup as to avoid big crowds this holiday season.

In addition to the bundle, Switch owners will be able to find $20 discounts on a number of Nintendo Switch games, including  Super Mario Maker 2, Luigi’s Mansion 3, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Mario Tennis Aces, Yoshi’s Crafted World, Splatoon 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
