Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 will both be backward compatible on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

With titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar Games has been the king of the past two console generations. With both games boasting robust online multiplayer components that players have sunk hundreds of hours into, Rockstar Games has finally laid out its plans for the next-generation.

We can confirm that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be backward compatible with the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S later this month. Additionally, the most recent versions of L.A. Noire and a number of classic Rockstar titles will also be playable on next-gen consoles.

Naturally, you’ll have to stay within the same console family and there’s that whole physical disc versus digital console potential issue. So if you own a physical disc of any backward compatible game, you’ll need to insert that disc into the PS5 or Xbox Series X. Obviously, this isn’t possible with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S consoles, so if you plan on playing these older games with the physical disc, you’ll need the console with the hard drive, which is naturally more expensive.

If you own these backward compatible games digitally, you’ll have instant access to download any of them provided they are tied to your PlayStation Network or Xbox Live accounts. As explained by Rockstar:

"On PlayStation 5 these will be available from the Your Collection section of your Game Library and on Xbox Series X|S from the Ready to Install section."

Even better, all of your progress can carry over from current- to next-gen consoles if you transfer your saved files via LAN cable, wireless connection or USB storage. You can also transfer cloud saves tied to PS Plus or Xbox Live. Additionally, all progress in GTA Online and Red Dead Online will also carry over as long as you’re playing on the same PSN or Xbox Live account.

While GTA V and RDR 2 are the two big games, there are a handful of backward compatible Rockstar Games titles on Xbox One (from the Xbox 360 or original Xbox) that will be playable on Xbox Series X|S:

  • Bully: Scholarship Edition
  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Midnight Club: Los Angeles
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis

For PlayStation 5, these games from PS4 will carry over:

  • Bully
  • Grand Theft Auto III
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Manhunt
  • Max Payne
  • Red Dead Revolver
  • The Warriors

There was no mention if Rockstar plans on releasing next-gen specific versions of Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption 2. Given how old GTA V is at this point, I’m thinking they’ll probably finally call it quits and focus on Grand Theft Auto 6. These older titles may get some sort of next-gen boost in performance, however, thanks to the improved hardware of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
